About this Event

Lee Miller and Roland Penrose at Farley Farm Antony Penrose
The story, as told by their son, of Roland Penrose, British Surrealist artist, and Lee Miller, American photographer, who shot fashion and combat with equal talent. This talk looks at how their early lives formed their motivations and how they strove to use art to make the world a better place. The last decades of their life together were at Farley Farm, their home in Sussex which was frequented by many prominent Surrealist and Modern artists.(Contains some war time images which may be disturbing.)
Antony Penrose has conserved and disseminated the work of his parents, Lee Miller and Roland Penrose for thirty years. He is the director of The Lee Miller Archives and The Penrose Collection at Farley Farm House in Sussex and has seen his parents' work featured in major exhibitions at the V&A, The National Portrait Gallery, Manchester Art Gallery and other high profile galleries. He has lectured at museums and universities around the world, and made tv documentaries. He has written a range of publications including The Boy Who Bit Picasso.
Doors and the bar at Thornden Hall Arts Centre open from 18.45; talks start at 19.30 and last an hour with additional time for questions. Free for members: visitors please pay £8 on the day at the signing in desk: card only.
